Is This What Happened to ZFS?

When Apple released seeds of Snow Leopard server prior to general release it contained an implementation of the ZFS filesystem. The inclusion of ZFS had many people jazzed. Prior to release, the feature was pulled without official comment from Apple.

Today, Coraid stopped selling the EtherDrive Z-Series NAS appliance due to a legal threat from NetApp over patents related to ZFS.

I wonder if these patents caused Apple to withdraw the filesystem?

I’m sad to see that we can add NetApp to the list of corporations that kill innovation in the industry with legal threats.

Informed word on the street is that Apple’s ZFS project was scuttled due to onerous licensing demands from Sun.

Well, you are closer to aforementioned street. However, if NetApp is running around suing people all the way back to 2007, then not only does ZFS seem to have Sun licensing issues… it also seems to have IP patent issues.
